Meet Your Park Steward

Why I’m a Steward: I am a 30-year resident of Eden Prairie and walk the path along Purgatory Creek several times a week. During those walks I often sit on an old bench with a small bronze plaque that only says, “Marta’s Bench.” The view from the bench overlooks the creek and wetland area, but the problem was that I “couldn’t see the creek through the buckthorn,” and started working on clearing the buckthorn.

I often hear the comment from people walking by, “You’ll never get rid of all the buckthorn.” To which I reply, “You may be right. We may not be able to eradicate buckthorn in the state, county or the city of Eden Prairie, but controlling it in the Edenvale Conservation Area can be achieved.” For me, it’s all about “giving back to your community and leaving it a better place than you received it.”
